Journeying with Jesus - New ARRIVAL

About The Book

i

This study seeks to follow Jesus from Nazareth to the various named towns, cities, and villages mentioned in Matthew, Mark, and Luke (Synoptic Gospels). Thomas Spann follows an itinerary or travelogue that informs today’s disciples not only about Jesus’ travels but what might be suggested lessons in these travels. He uses both contemporary biblical scholarship and a homiletical approach in crafting suggested lessons from Jesus’ ministry in a specific site.

Inclusive of the Lenten Season, this study may be used for longer sessions on the life and ministry of Jesus. Following a brief commentary on Jesus’ visit to various cities, towns, and villages, concluding in Jerusalem, this study offers creative vignettes which make the study relevant. An example of the title of a vignette is “Jesus in Nain Today.” There are reflection questions and assignments for further study and discussion.

This book concludes with an Ash Wednesday sermon and sermons on the Seven Last Words of Jesus from the Cross.

Given the length of the study session, a facilitator will decide which sections (cities or towns, vignettes, and sermons) to use. Other portions of the book may be used in a second year of study.

This book concludes with an Ash Wednesday sermon and sermons on the Seven Last Words of Jesus from the Cross.

Preface

Significance of This Study

Traditionally the Lenten Season begins on Ash Wednesday and concludes on Holy Saturday. This is a 40-day period, minus Sundays. For Christians this is a period of fasting, reflection, and renewing faith commitments. Traditional language focuses on human mortality, as the ashes are imposed with the sign of the cross at the beginning of the season.

It is important to note that neither Ash Wednesday nor Easter occurs on the same day each year. Unlike Mother’s Day, which is always the second Sunday in May, or Father’s Day, which is always the third Sunday in June, the date for Easter is dependent on calendrical and equinox factors. It would be easier perhaps if a set date could be identified; the dates for Easter are beholding to a tradition that goes back a few centuries. ……..
